Technologies to make an impact in App development in 2023
With 5G steadily becoming the mobile connectivity standard everywhere, lower latency, faster speeds and faster data transfers will quickly lead to a higher output of quality apps leveraging our generation's newest innovations and technologies.
Looking into the tech crystal ball
In this article, we predict which technologies we will see make a significant impact next year and for the years to come. Let's start with some of the heavyweights
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML)
With larger well-known companies already integrating AI & ML technologies in their business models, these are technologies that will undoubtedly continue to grow and make an impact in 2023 and years to come.
AI & ML will increase the speed at which apps are developed while reducing errors in the development made by humans. Apps will become more intelligent, increasing overall performance and improving the experience for the users. Features such as face/voice/text/emotional recognition, animation, search and navigation and personalization will create a new world of immersive user experiences.
For example, have you tried talking with an AI-powered chat-bot recently? Or what about the recently release ChatGPT? These types of interactions are becoming smarter and highly personalized too, which saves you the hassle of contacting the company directly whilst improving your experience with the company. On the other hand, this sort of automation saves the company time, money and energy. So it’s a win-win situation.
The future of apps is a place where customers want solutions that are relevant and bring instant value to them. AI & ML will empower app developers to make apps which improves interaction, drives engagement and delivers a much better customer experience.
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR)
AR and VR are not unfamiliar technologies. They have been around for a while. However, we are beginning to see the adoption of said technologies in more industries than just gaming. Healthcare, e-commerce, tourism, education and Social Media (like Snapchat) have entered the race to deliver powerful, immersive AR/VR customer experiences.
We will be seeing AR & VR coupled with incredible features including motion tracking, people occlusion, etc.
Apple’s ARkit and Google’s ARcore will power magic within AR/VR and we are going to see a much higher volume of apps embedded in them which make use of these technologies. Again, not exclusively gaming apps. Think Google Maps but empowered by AR to improve users location finding and navigation through the use of their phone’s camera. Or the endless amount of AR face filters in Snapchat and Instagram. Not to forget the AR smart glasses that multiple manufacturers keep innovating and improving for the future.
Wearable technology apps
Are you wearing one? There’s a high chance that you are! Popularity of wearable devices continues to increase, and so will the possibilities for innovation. In the last few years there has been a substantial growth in the wearables industry and the number of connected devices globally is predicted to reach over 1 billion by the end of 2022. That’s a lot of wearables. Creating stellar app user experiences on devices such as smartwatches, fitness trackers, rings,
There are almost endless possibilities in the types of apps you’re able to develop for this technology. From health apps that can measure stress, body levels and condition to payment capabilities we are seeing become the dominant payform via smartphones today. Marketers can leverage beacon technology to promote discounts and offers based on location directly to the smartwatch.
If you have not already begun to explore these capabilities it’s about high time you start doing it now.
The Power of Voice (Search)
Hey Siri! Alexa? We have a great gift in us. The power of our voice.
That power is truly realized thanks to the development of digital assistant technology like Siri, Alexa and Google Assistant. As more and more people are gaining access to these technologies, developers have to be mindful of how they approach search engines to make sure their app or other digital solution is discoverable via voice search.
In the future we are most likely going to see more businesses offering apps that will let us communicate and interact via voice. These apps will be powered by AI and will provide a better user experience than those developed using traditional development methods. Voice-first UI’s will most likely be adopted widely for mobile apps. So instead of using finger motion like scrolling and swiping in your app, you will be able to control your interaction and navigation via your voice. And chatting with an AI powered chatbot will come as close to having a real conversation with a human being as it possibly can. Quite mind blowing, right?
Mobile Commerce (m-commerce)
M-commerce is the mobile equivalent of e-commerce and it’s a technology that is growing vastly. Making purchases via apps are getting more convenient which means the consumer behavior patterns are shifting more towards buying via apps than through web pages. It’s stated that 79% of smartphone users worldwide used their mobile device to make online purchases in 2021.
Think banking apps, transactional wallet apps like Apple Pay, retailers like H&M with in-app purchasing, and your go-to mobile ticketing apps for concerts and cinema visits.
We believe that m-commerce will continue to capture market share from “traditional” website e-commerce also due to the fact that we are also spending increasingly more time on the internet via our mobile devices than on desktops.
Self-Service Technologies in Apps
Me, myself, and I! It’s really all about that.
The concept of self-service apps, it essentially being an intelligent and autonomous service system, is perhaps the most powerful human behavior game changer we have experienced so far. Because it has changed our lives and the way we interact with the outside world. We are increasingly given the opportunity to service ourselves via app functionality, saving us time and effort and making simple daily tasks easy and seamless. An autonomous quick-fix! SST’s, or self-service technologies, is becoming a dominant force in app development.
Think about how our daily tasks were impacted during covid-lockdown. We were unable to go to our bank and handle transactional affairs like we used to. But open sesame, with the help of bank apps service systems it became possible for us to service ourselves, do our affairs completely autonomously without the help of personal bank assistance. And today, that’s just the new standard for how we conduct our financial business.
We’ve even made quite a few self-service apps ourselves to give you concrete examples. GSV, Andel Energi, Sygeforsikring Danmark to name a few.
That’s it for now folks! These were our top mentions of existing technologies that we believe will make an even stronger impact next year - and the years to come.
