How we helped Andel Energi cut hosting CO₂ by 94%

Digital experiences often feel weightless, but their physical footprint is real. By moving Andel Energi’s hosting to renewable energy, we’ve cut their digital CO2 emissions by 94% - proving that even technical, "hidden" choices can drive massive climate impact without compromising performance.

Same solution. Much greener hosting.

Most people never consider the carbon footprint behind the digital solutions they use every day – but Denmark’s largest energy company, Andel Energi, does. Their ambition to make sustainable choices across the business, including in their digital services, led to a shift in hosting - the servers and infrastructure that keep the digital solutions running - with a surprisingly big impact. By working closely together, we’ve reduced the emissions by more than 94%.

Every digital service uses energy. It’s easy to forget, because when something is digital, it feels weightless - but behind the scenes, servers are running around the clock. Together with Andel Energi, we wanted to make sure that energy came from a cleaner place. So we moved the hosting to a Swedish data centre powered mainly by renewable energy such as solar, wind and hydropower.

Hosting is not just a technical choice - it’s a climate responsibility. Together with Adapt, we’ve taken another meaningful step towards a more sustainable digital infrastructure.
Marlene Holmgaard Fris, CEO, Andel Energi

Before the move, the website was hosted in a data centre connected to the German electricity grid, which emits about 416 grams of CO₂ per kWh. In Sweden, the average is only 23 grams of CO₂ per kWh.

That single change had a huge impact:

  • Before: ~785 kg CO₂ per year

  • Now: ~44 kg CO₂ per year

Reduction: over 94%

To put it in everyday terms: that’s like going from 150,000 CO₂ emissions from phone charges to just 8,500. Or the difference between what 36 trees can absorb in a year versus 4. These numbers are estimates, but they clearly show the impact.

climate-friendly power

A digital tool helping Danes understand their energy

Andel Energi’s digital solution has become an everyday tool for many Danes. With more than 1 million customers, it helps people track their electricity consumption, follow hourly prices, and understand how much of the grid’s electricity comes from renewable sources.

For two years in a row, the app has been named the best digital self-service solution in the Danish electricity sector by EPSI. A recognition that reflects Andel Energi’s ongoing dedication to both customers and climate-friendly innovation. And we’re proud to support that work through our ongoing collaboration.

As a digital agency, we have a responsibility not only to deliver effective solutions, but also to incorporate sustainability into the digital infrastructure. The collaboration with Andel Energi shows that even technical choices such as hosting can have a significant climate impact - without compromising performance or user experience.
Kresten Wiingaard, CEO at Adapt

As digital services take up more space in our daily lives, their environmental footprint grows quietly in the background. That’s why even seemingly small decisions - like choosing where your digital solutions are hosted - deserve attention.

This change isn’t a grand gesture, but it shows what a single, well-considered choice can deliver. By shifting to cleaner hosting, Andel Energi has cut emissions without altering the experience people rely on. And we’ll keep looking for similar improvements, because although they aren’t always noticeable, they often make a great difference.
