How we helped Andel Energi move their hosting to an electricity grid with lower CO₂ emissions

Digital experiences often feel weightless, but their physical footprint is real. By moving the hosting of Andel Energi’s website from a data center powered by the German electricity grid to one powered by the Swedish grid, we estimate that we have reduced the hosting emissions from approximately 785 to approximately 44 kg of CO₂ per year - proving that even technical, "hidden" choices can have a real impact without compromising performance.

Hosting with lower CO₂ emissions

Most people never consider the carbon footprint behind the digital solutions they use every day – but Denmark’s largest energy company, Andel Energi, does. Their ambition to reduce CO2 emissions across the business, including in their digital services, led to a shift in hosting - the servers and infrastructure that keep the digital solutions running. By working closely together, we’ve reduced the emissions by more than 94%.

Every digital service uses energy. It’s easy to forget, because when something is digital, it feels weightless - but behind the scenes, servers are running around the clock. Together with Andel Energi, we wanted to cut the emissions from the electricity the servers use. So we moved the hosting to a Swedish data centre. On average, the Swedish grid emits far less CO₂ per kWh than the German grid.

“Hosting is not just a technical choice - energy consumption and operations also play a role. Together with Adapt, we’ve taken another step towards a lower-carbon digital infrastructure.”
Marlene Holmgaard Fris, CEO, Andel Energi

Before the move, the website was hosted in a data centre connected to the German electricity grid, which emits about 416 grams of CO₂ per kWh. In Sweden, the average is only 23 grams of CO₂ per kWh.

That single change had a clear impact:

  • Before: ~785 kg CO₂ per year
  • Now: ~44 kg CO₂ per year

Reduction: over 94%

To put it in everyday terms: that’s like going from 150,000 CO₂ emissions from phone charges to just 8,500.

The comparisons are based on general estimates and serve only to illustrate the scale of the savings.

A digital tool helping Danes understand their energy

Andel Energi’s digital solution has become an everyday tool for many Danes. With more than 1 million customers, it helps people track their electricity consumption, follow hourly prices, and understand how much of the grid’s electricity comes from renewable sources.

For two years in a row, the app has been named the best digital self-service solution in the Danish electricity sector by EPSI. A recognition that reflects Andel Energi’s ongoing focus on their customers and on digital innovation. And we’re proud to support that work through our ongoing collaboration.

“As a digital agency, we have a responsibility not only to deliver effective solutions, but also to reduce the CO2 emissions of the digital infrastructure. The collaboration with Andel Energi shows that even technical choices such as hosting can make a measurable difference - without compromising performance or user experience.”
Kresten Wiingaard, CEO at Adapt

As digital services play a growing role in our everyday lives, their environmental footprint grows quietly in the background. That's why even small decisions – like choosing where your digital solutions are hosted – deserve attention.

This change isn’t a grand gesture, but it shows what a single, well-considered choice can deliver. By moving its hosting, Andel Energi has cut its estimated hosting emissions without altering the experience people rely on. And we’ll keep looking for similar improvements, because although they aren’t always noticeable, they often make a great difference.
